The Identity Defined Security Alliance Publishes New Guidance on Remote Workforce Security

Whitepaper advises organizations on identity security strategies for addressing a variety of remote work challenges

DENVER, November 4, 2020 — The Identity Defined Security Alliance (IDSA), an industry alliance that helps organizations leverage existing cybersecurity investments to establish a stronger security posture, today announced the publication of its latest guidance, “Securing Your Remote Workforce Through Identity-Centric Security.” As a result of stay-at-home orders tied to the pandemic, all but essential businesses were met with a remote workforce, and with it, the challenge of providing and securing employee access to applications and data online.

According to a recent survey by Enterprise Technology Research, the percentage of workers permanently working from home is expected to double in 2021, creating the need for security leaders to support a hybrid workforce that maintains productivity and security. The acceleration of cloud adoption and digital transformation is highlighting identity as the connection between the enterprise and its users. To threat actors, identities are the holy grail which can be used to access sensitive applications, move laterally throughout a compromised network, access sensitive applications and systems, and ultimately exfiltrate data. Even before the pandemic, a study conducted by Dimensional Research and sponsored by the IDSA, revealed that 79 percent of organizations suffered an identity-related breach in the last two years.

In its new guidance, the IDSA examines how Identity Defined Security Outcomes — the desired results of an identity-focused strategy — can help CISOs secure their organization as employees go virtual, and strategies for common challenges they face, including: 

  • Employment Eligibility Verification in a Remote Work World – virtually onboarding new employees from identity proofing to provisioning access needed to perform their job.
  • Employee Offboarding in a Remote Work World – virtually offboarding employees and automatically removing access upon termination.
  • Securing Personal Endpoints – securing access to sensitive corporate data from personal devices.
  • Collaborating Securely – providing an extra layer of protection for collaboration tools that are now seeing widespread adoption.

The future of security, even before the massive shift to remote work, is being driven by the erosion of the corporate perimeter and the need to protect enterprise identities – human and non-human. As organizations rethink security and make the shift toward a Zero Trust approach, the IDSA is focused on providing the education and practical guidance to help security leaders adopt identity-centric approaches.
